What’s the climate like?

Textbook: p. 67
GoalThe climate of Uzbekistan: average temperature, rainfall; seasons.
New words
average · o‘rtacharainfall · yog‘in miqdoritemperature · haroratseason · fasl
Explanation

The climate of Uzbekistan is sharply continental: summers are long, hot and dry, and winters are cold. Seasons: spring, summer, autumn, winter. Summer is the longest season and winter is shorter. Average means usual: “The average temperature in July is high.” Rainfall is the amount of rain and snow in a period: “Average rainfall in summer is very low.” In Tashkent the average January temperature is about 1 °C and in July about 27–28 °C; rain and snow fall mostly in winter and spring, and there is almost none in summer. Reading a graph: a high bar means a lot of rain. Compare: Great Britain — mild and rainy; Indonesia — hot and wet; Russia — cold; Turkmenistan — hot and dry.

Worked examples
“Climate graph”. Look at the graph of Tashkent. In January the average temperature is about one degree, and in July it is about twenty-seven. Rainfall is highest in spring and lowest in summer. So Tashkent has cold winters and hot dry summers. The climate in Great Britain is different: it is mild and rainy all year.
— What’s the average temperature in July? — It’s about 27 degrees. — What’s the rainfall in summer? — It’s very low.
Class activity
