The syllable and its importance
Textbook: pp. 43–44
GoalTell the syllable, open and closed syllables, and divide words into syllables.
New words
syllable · bo‘g‘inopen syllable · ochiq bo‘g‘inclosed syllable · yopiq bo‘g‘inpulse of air · havo zarbi
Explanation
A syllable is a sound or a group of sounds pronounced with one pulse of air. Each syllable is built on one vowel, so the number of vowels in a word shows the number of syllables: kom-pyu-ter has three vowels and three syllables. By their ending, syllables are of two kinds. If a syllable ends in a vowel, it is open; if it ends in a consonant, it is closed. For example, in the word A-zim, «A» is an open syllable and «zim» a closed one. Counting the vowels and saying the word slowly, part by part, helps to divide it into syllables.
Worked examples
o-na (2 open), mak-tab (2 closed), qa-lam (open, closed).
ki-tob-lar — 3 syllables: open, closed, closed.
Class activity
“Syllable claps”: children say a word, clap once per syllable and name the kinds of syllables.
