Explanation
Before saying a proverb, you must understand the situation. For example, if someone hurries to begin work: «Yetti o‘lchab, bir kes» (measure seven times, cut once); if friends join forces: «Birlashgan o‘zar, birlashmagan to‘zar» (the united win, the divided fall apart); if someone learns a lot by reading: «Oz-oz o‘rganib dono bo‘lur». The meaning of a proverb is often figurative, not literal. An idiom equals a word, while a proverb expresses a complete thought. To comment on a proverb: 1) state its literal meaning, 2) find the real meaning, 3) give an example.
Worked examples
When we work as a team: «Birlashgan o‘zar, birlashmagan to‘zar».
To a friend who wants to decide in haste: «Yetti o‘lchab, bir kes».
Class activity
Situation cards: one pupil reads a situation, another finds a fitting proverb and comments on it.
