Explanation

A word that does not fit on a line is carried over to the next line by syllables. 1. The word is divided at a syllable boundary: mak-tab-dosh (schoolmate), ten-nis; the apostrophe stays in the first part: san’-at (art), ma’-no (meaning). 2. A single vowel at the beginning or end of a word may neither be left alone nor carried over alone: not a’-lo but a’lo (excellent); not o-na but ona (mother). 3. The combinations sh, ch, ng are not split: qo‘-shiq (song), ki-chik (small), ko‘-ngil (heart). 4. Combinations written with numbers and abbreviated units are not separated: 7-«A» sinf, 12-xonadon, 3 kg, 40 km.

Worked examples
Kitob-xon, o‘qi-tuv-chi — correctly divided.
Ona, uka — cannot be divided: a lone vowel would be left alone.
