Writing with a hyphen
Main cases where a hyphen is used: 1. Paired and reduplicated words: non-tuz (bread and salt), qovun-tarvuz (melons and watermelons); asta-asta (slowly), katta-katta (very big). 2. If the parts of a paired word are joined by -u (-yu), it is attached to the first word with a hyphen: tun-u kun (day and night), yer-u osmon (earth and sky). 3. Parts linked by -ma or ba- are hyphenated: ketma-ket (one after another), yuzma-yuz (face to face), dam-badam (now and then); but if one of the parts is not used on its own, the word is written together: darbadar (homeless, wandering). 4. The suffixes -chi, -a (-ya), -ku, -u (-yu), -da, -e, -ey are hyphenated: u-chi, bilasan-ku, yaxshi-da; while -mi, -oq (-yoq), -ov (-yov), -gina (-kina, -qina), -ki are written together: bildingmi, hoziroq, sekingina. 5. The short forms -la and -chun of bilan (with) and uchun (for) are hyphenated: do‘stim-la, Vatan-chun.
“Hyphen or not?”: the teacher says a word and you mark «ha» (hyphen) or «yo‘q».
