Pronunciation and spelling of consonant clusters

Textbook: p. 98
GoalKnow the pronunciation and spelling of words with consonant clusters.
New words
consonant cluster · qator undoshthought · fikrbrick · g‘ishtsport · sport
Explanation

When two different consonants stand side by side inside one syllable, the word has a consonant cluster: fikr (thought), nutq (speech), hukm (judgement), qirq (forty). In some words ending in a cluster the last consonant is hardly heard in speech, but it is not dropped in writing: g‘isht (brick), farzand (child), do‘st (friend). Native Uzbek words do not begin with a cluster; a cluster at the start of a word occurs in words borrowed from other languages: sport, kreslo (armchair), trolleybus.

Worked examples
Do‘st may sound «do‘s», but t is written.
Sport, kreslo — a cluster at the start: borrowed words.
