Pronunciation and spelling of double consonants
Textbook: pp. 96–97
GoalKnow the pronunciation and spelling of words with double consonants.
New words
double consonant · qo‘sh undoshcash desk · kassacrystal · kristallbitter · achchiq
Explanation
When two identical consonants stand side by side, the word is called a word with a double consonant. In native Uzbek words both parts of the double consonant are clearly heard and written: katta (big), achchiq (bitter), to‘qqiz (nine). In some borrowed words the double consonant is said like a single one but written double: kassa (cash desk), tennis. In words like kilogramm, kristall one of the final double consonants is hardly heard, but it is kept in writing. When a suffix beginning with the same consonant is added to such a word, three identical letters are not written in a row; one is dropped: kristall + -lar = kristallar.
Worked examples
Kassa, tennis — said as one consonant, written with two.
Ball + -lar = ballar: the double l does not become three.
