Explanation
Information is the data a person receives from the surroundings through the sense organs; facts about who or what something is also count as information. We receive it with five senses – sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch – and most of it comes through sight. Information may be analog (continuous, like temperature, sound or light) or discrete (made of separate values or numbers); in a computer information is stored in digital form. Good information is accurate, clear, reliable, up to date and useful. Searching, collecting, storing, processing and transmitting are the information processes. The methods and technical tools used for them are called information technologies. When you use the internet, never give your password to anyone, do not write personal details to strangers, and if a strange message or request arrives, show it at once to your parents or teacher.
Worked examples
A doctor measures a patient’s height and weight and writes them on a card – collecting and storing. A librarian looks up a book in the catalogue – searching. A teacher works out the average of the marks – processing.
A message online says “you won a prize, send your password”. It is untrustworthy and may be a trick: never send a password, and show the message to an adult.
Class activity
“Five senses” game: a blindfolded pupil identifies a safe object (soft toy, apple, bell) by touch, smell and hearing; the class names the senses used.
Practice
1
Through which five sense organs does a person receive information?
Sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch.
2
Which is analog and which is discrete: air temperature; a list of numbers?
Air temperature – analog (continuous); a list of numbers – discrete.
3
Match to information processes: looking for a book in the library; saving a photo on a phone; sending a message to a friend.
Search; store; transmit.
4
Why should you never tell your password to others online?
Anyone who knows your password can get into your account, read or change your data and do harm in your name.
