Explanation

Typing text quickly and without mistakes is an important skill. There are keyboard trainers – special programs that teach fast typing. The best method is ten-finger (“closed eyes”) typing: all fingers work while the eyes look at the text on the screen, not at the keyboard. The left-hand fingers rest on A, S, D, F and the right-hand fingers on J, K, L and ;, with both thumbs on the Space bar. The F and J keys have a small bump that helps the fingers find their place without looking. After each key, the finger returns to the home row. First type slowly but without mistakes; speed comes later. Choose practice programs together with your teacher or an adult; do not download or install programs from unknown websites.

Worked examples
Typing the letters “fad”: f – left index finger, a – left little finger, d – left middle finger. After each key the fingers return to the home row.
Anvar typed 150 characters in 5 minutes: a speed of 150 : 5 = 30 characters/minute. A month later he typed 600 in 10 minutes – 60 characters/minute: his speed doubled.
Class activity

“Fingers’ home”: pupils place their hands on the desk as on the home row; the teacher calls a letter (f, j, a, ;) and pupils lift the right finger. Then, eyes closed, they “type” the home row letters for 10 seconds.

Practice
1
Which keys do the left and right hand fingers rest on in the home row?
2
What are the bumps on F and J for?
3
240 characters were typed in 6 minutes. What is the speed (characters per minute)?
4
Why is it better to type slowly and correctly first and increase speed later?
