Making simple cartoons in Scratch
Textbook: pp. 106–108
GoalPlan a cartoon script and make a simple cartoon project with several sprites, a backdrop, movement and sound, then save it.
New words
cartoon: a film made of drawn or computer pictures · multfilmscenario: the plan of events of a film · ssenariyduplicate: make a copy of a sprite with its script · nusxa olish (Duplicate)size of a sprite in per cent · masshtab (o‘lcham)
Explanation
A cartoon is a film made with drawings or computer graphics. It combines pictures, movement, sound, music and a scenario (the plan of events); the order of events in a scenario is like the order of commands in a program. In Scratch a cartoon is made like this: first write the scenario (characters, backdrop, what happens); then choose the backdrop and sprites; build a script for each character (movement, costumes, repeat, sound); watch the result and fix it. If you need a second character that moves the same way, right-click the sprite and choose “duplicate” – the script is copied too – and then change its colour, size (for example 70%) and position. A sprite moves smoothly from place to place with the “glide” block. Save the project. If you want to share it online, agree with your teacher or parents first, do not put your name, school or address in the description, and credit the author for any part taken from someone else’s project.
Worked examples
A “Space” cartoon. Scenario: 1) backdrop – a starry sky; 2) two rockets fly from the bottom to the top; 3) the second rocket is smaller than the first. The second rocket is a duplicate, size 60%, with a changed colour; music plays in the background.
A sprite glides in 3 seconds from x = –150 to x = 150. It moves 150 – (–150) = 300 units, which is 100 units per second.
Class activity
“Scenario workshop”: groups draw a 4–5 frame scenario (picture plus one sentence) on paper and hand it to another group, who build it in Scratch.
Practice
1
What is a cartoon scenario?
A plan of characters, backdrop and the order of events.
2
How can you quickly make a second character?
Right-click the sprite and choose duplicate, then change its colour, size and position.
3
A sprite glided 400 units in 4 seconds. What is its speed per second?
100
4
Why agree with adults and avoid personal details before putting a cartoon online?
Everyone can see the internet; name, school and address can be risky with strangers.
