Selecting areas in a graphics editor

Textbook: pp. 76–78
GoalSelect an area with the rectangle, oval, lasso and magic wand, then move, copy, cut and delete the selected area.
New words
selection: marking part of a picture to work on it · belgilash (tanlash)lasso: select by drawing around any outline by hand · lassomagic wand: selects an area of similar colour with one click · sehrli tayoqchacrop: keep only the selected part of the picture · qirqib olish (kesish)
Explanation

To work on one part of a picture you first select that part; an action then affects only the selected area. There are four main ways to select: a rectangle, an oval (circle), the lasso – drawing round any outline with the mouse – and the magic wand, which automatically selects the connected area of a colour similar to the spot you click. Holding Shift turns the rectangle into a square and the oval into a circle. A selected area can be dragged to move it, copied with Ctrl+C, cut with Ctrl+X, pasted with Ctrl+V or deleted with Delete. “Crop to Selection” keeps only that part of the picture. If you fill a selected area, the colour goes only inside it – handy for precise colouring. When you finish, press Ctrl+D to deselect.

Worked examples
In a picture of a flower the background is one colour: click it with the magic wand and the background, not the flower, is selected. Delete removes the background and leaves the flower.
If you need a 200 × 200 square out of a 600 × 400 picture, select a square with Shift and use Crop to Selection. The new picture has 200 × 200 = 40 000 pixels.
Class activity

“Which tool?”: the teacher points to parts of a picture (a ball, a cloud, a house, a plain sky) and pupils name the best selection tool: oval, lasso, rectangle or magic wand.

Practice
1
Name four ways to select an area.
2
How does the magic wand work and when is it handy?
3
What shapes do the rectangle and oval become with Shift held?
4
Why does colouring inside a selection not harm other parts of the picture?
