Creating and editing a document in the word processor
A new document is created with File → New (Ctrl+N), and a saved one is opened with File → Open (Ctrl+O). Making changes to a document is called editing: deleting, cutting, copying and pasting are examples. The cursor (a blinking vertical line) shows where you type. Arrow keys move it; Home jumps to the start of the line, End to the end of the line, Ctrl+Home to the start of the document and Ctrl+End to its end. You select text by dragging with the mouse, double-clicking a word, triple-clicking a paragraph or using Shift with the arrows; Ctrl+A selects everything. Then: Ctrl+X cuts, Ctrl+C copies, Ctrl+V pastes, Delete removes, Ctrl+Z undoes. Enter starts a new paragraph. A hyphen (-) and a dash (–) are different: the hyphen is used inside words without spaces, the dash with a space on each side. Roman numerals (for example XXI) are typed with Latin letters.
“Electronic dictation” contest: the teacher reads (or writes on the board) a 5–6 sentence text and everyone types it in Word. After the time, word count (in the status bar) and mistakes are compared.
