Explanation

The keyboard is used to enter information into the computer. By their job its keys fall into six groups: letter and number keys, cursor keys (arrows, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down), special keys (Esc, Enter, Shift, Caps Lock, Ctrl, Alt, Backspace, Delete, Insert), function keys (F1–F12), the numeric keypad on the right and the indicator lights. The Space bar leaves a gap between words. Backspace deletes the character to the left of the cursor and Delete the one to the right. One click of the left mouse button selects an object, a quick double-click opens a folder or file; the right button opens the context menu and the wheel scrolls the page up and down. A triple-click in a text editor selects a whole paragraph. The Print Screen key copies a picture of the screen (a screenshot) to memory.

Worked examples
To type “Samarqand”: hold Shift and press S for the capital letter, then release Shift and type the rest.
You typed “Toshkemt” by mistake. Move the cursor with an arrow key to just after the “m”, press Backspace once to delete the “m”, and type “n”: “Toshkent”.
Class activity

Key-finding contest: the teacher names a key (Enter, Space, Esc, Delete, Caps Lock) and pupils point to it on a keyboard picture. Then a mouse drill: “one click, double-click, right click”.

Practice
1
Into how many groups do keyboard keys fall, and which?
2
How do the Backspace and Delete keys differ?
3
How many times do you press the left mouse button to open a file?
4
Why is Caps Lock handy for typing only capitals, but Shift for a single capital?
