Working with tables in documents

Textbook: pp. 61–63
GoalKnow the parts of a table (row, column, cell) and create, fill, merge and shade a table in Word.
New words
table: cells formed by horizontal and vertical lines · jadvalrow: a horizontal line of cells · satrcolumn: a vertical line of cells · ustuncell: where a row and a column meet · katak (yacheyka)
Explanation

To keep data tidy and clear it helps to write it as a table: shop prices, a weather log, a library list. A table is a set of cells formed by horizontal and vertical lines. Horizontal lines of cells are rows, vertical ones are columns, and where they cross is a cell. In Word a table is made with Insert → Table: you mark the number of rows and columns on the white grid. Cells can hold text, numbers and pictures; Tab (or the mouse) moves to the next cell. We change column width by dragging the border line. To merge cells, select them and choose right-click → Merge Cells. To colour cells use Shading on the Table Design tab. The header row is usually bold and coloured.

Worked examples
A timetable: 6 columns (Monday–Saturday) and 5 rows (lessons 1–5). The total number of cells is 6 × 5 = 30. The first row has the day names in bold and shaded.
A table with 4 columns and 5 rows has 20 cells. If we merge three cells of the first row for a title, the number of cells drops by 2, to 18.
Class activity

“My class table”: each group makes a class table in Word with name, birth month and favourite subject. Then groups check each other’s tables.

Practice
1
What are a row, a column and a cell?
2
How many cells are in a table with 5 rows and 6 columns?
3
How is a table created in Word?
4
Why is merging cells handy for a title?
