The graphics editor interface and toolbar

Textbook: pp. 67–70
GoalExplain computer graphics and graphics editors; know what a pixel and a colour palette are and the main parts of a graphics editor window.
New words
graphics editor: a program for making and editing pictures · grafik muharrirpixel: the smallest dot of a digital picture · pikselpalette: the set of colours to choose from · palitratoolbar: the panel of drawing and editing tools · uskunalar paneli
Explanation

Computer graphics means creating and processing pictures on a computer. For this we use programs called graphics editors: Paint, Paint.NET, Tux Paint and others. Paint.NET is free and can work with several documents and layers. A digital picture is built from tiny dots called pixels (picture elements); each pixel is given by a mix of red, green and blue (RGB). A graphics editor window usually has: a title bar, a menu bar, a toolbar, a canvas (where you draw), a colour palette, a layers window, a history window and a status bar. The main tools are the pencil, brush, fill, eraser, colour picker, text, line and shapes, and selection tools. Pictures are saved as PNG, JPEG, BMP or GIF; Paint.NET’s own format (.pdn) keeps the layers.

Worked examples
A picture is 300 × 400 pixels. The number of pixels is 300 × 400 = 120 000.
You want to reuse the exact colour of the sky elsewhere: click it with the colour picker so it becomes the main colour, then apply it with the fill tool.
Class activity

“Find the tool”: a graphics editor window is shown; the teacher names a job (“pick a colour”, “draw a line”, “remove a mistake”) and pupils point to the right tool.

Practice
1
What is computer graphics and which programs are used for it?
2
What is a pixel? How many pixels in a 200 × 150 picture?
3
What is the colour picker for?
4
Why should a layered picture also be saved in the program’s own format such as .pdn?
