Explanation

Informatics is the science that teaches how to search for, collect, store, process and transmit information quickly with the help of computers and communication technology. Its name comes from the French word informatique, built from “information” and “automatique” (automatic). In English the field is often called computer science. In Uzbekistan academician V. Q. Qobulov made a big contribution to informatics and cybernetics. In informatics, information is the main raw material and the computer is the main tool. The subject has three parts: hardware (the physical devices), software (the programs) and brainware (human knowledge and thinking). Its roots are old: the Greek philosopher Aristotle founded logic, the Central Asian scholar Abu Nasr al-Farabi wrote works on logic, and Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, who lived in the 9th century, described rules for carrying out steps one after another. The word “algorithm” comes from the Latin form of his name.

Worked examples
Keyboard, monitor and processor are hardware. A text editor and a game are software. The child writing a program contributes brainware – the thinking.
Following a recipe is like an algorithm: the order of steps stays fixed. Al-Khwarizmi described such step-by-step rules in mathematics.
Class activity

“Three corners” game: the teacher calls a word (printer, Word, quick thinking, mouse, Paint, writing a program). Pupils stand in the hardware, software or brainware corner.

Practice
1
What does informatics teach?
2
Who is the Greek philosopher who founded logic, and which scholar’s name gave us the word “algorithm”? In which century did he live?
3
Sort into hardware, software or brainware: monitor, the Word program, inventing an algorithm.
4
Why can a computer not think of everything itself – why do we need people?
