Working with layers

Textbook: pp. 79–81
GoalExplain what a layer is; create layers, hide them, change their order and merge them.
New words

Explanation

A layer is a transparent sheet laid over the picture. Each layer can hold its own drawing, and layers sit one above another: an upper layer covers the lower one, but because the empty parts of a layer are transparent, the lower one shows through. The benefit is that you can move, delete or colour something on one layer without touching the others. At the bottom of the layers window are buttons: add a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N), delete, duplicate, merge with the layer below, move up or down, and properties. The checkbox beside each layer hides or shows it. To colour the background choose the lowest layer. Once layers are merged they become one picture and cannot be separated again, so first save a layered copy (.pdn), then save as PNG or JPEG.

Worked examples
A landscape: layer 1 – sky (background); layer 2 – mountains; layer 3 – sun. To hide the sun behind the mountains, move layer 3 below layer 2.
A picture has a background plus 3 layers, 4 in all. If we merge two of them, 4 – 1 = 3 layers remain.
Class activity

“Transparent sheets”: the teacher lays drawings on transparent film (tree, house, sun) on the desk; pupils change the order, watch the picture change and compare it with layers.

Practice
1
What is a layer and why is it useful?
2
Which keys create a new layer?
3
A picture has a background and 5 layers. After merging two layers, how many layers remain (counting the background)?
4
Why save a layered copy (such as .pdn) before merging layers?
