Explanation

Editing a picture means changing an existing picture to improve it or make something new. The Effects menu gives a picture different looks: blur, frost, glass tile, pencil sketch and others. To move an object into another picture, first select the background around it with the magic wand or lasso and delete it; the deleted area looks like a chessboard – that sign means transparency. The remaining object is copied and pasted onto a new layer, made smaller and dragged to the right place. To keep the transparency save the picture as PNG or GIF; JPEG does not keep transparency. When you work with photos of other people, get their permission; do not alter a photo to mock or upset someone, and do not post photos containing personal information online.

Worked examples
A greeting card: the white background of a kite you drew is removed with the magic wand, the kite is copied onto a new layer above a sky picture and made smaller; then “Congratulations!” is added and the card is saved as PNG.
You want to make your friend’s photo “funny” and send it to the class group. The right way is to ask permission, and if they say no, not to send it.
Class activity

“Effect contest”: each pair applies a different effect to one picture; the class discusses which suits it best (only own pictures or ones given for the lesson).

Practice
1
What does the chessboard-like checked area in a picture mean?
2
In which format must a picture be saved to keep transparency, and in which is it lost?
3
List in order the steps for moving an object from one picture into another.
4
Why is it wrong to alter and share your friend’s picture without their consent?
