Making simple pictures in a graphics editor

Explanation

We start drawing by creating a new document: choose File → New (Ctrl+N) and enter the width and height in pixels, for example 300 × 400 or 500 × 500. Then pick the main colour from the palette. The pencil draws a thin line, while the brush draws a softer line whose width can be changed; these settings (width, softness) are in the top row of the toolbar. The fill tool (paint bucket) colours a closed region completely; if the region is not closed, the colour spills outside. With the shape tool you can draw a rectangle, oval, polygon or curve; holding Shift keeps the proportions right. If you make a mistake, Ctrl+Z undoes the last action and Ctrl+Y redoes it. Press Ctrl+D to leave a selection. Save from time to time with Ctrl+S; a finished picture can be saved as PNG or JPEG.

Worked examples
“My house”: a 500 × 500 document; a rectangle for the wall, a triangle for the roof, small rectangles for the door and window. Colour each part with fill; the lines must meet so the regions are closed.
A traffic light: draw a black rectangle, draw one circle inside it with Shift, and copy the circle twice. Colour the circles red, yellow and green. The number of shapes: 1 + 3 = 4.
Class activity

“Same picture”: in pairs, the first pupil describes a picture in words (“a large green rectangle with a yellow circle on top”) and the second draws it without seeing. Then they compare.
