Working with pictures in documents
Textbook: pp. 58–60
GoalInsert pictures and shapes into a document, change their size, position and look, and follow safety and copyright rules when using pictures.
New words
picture format: PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF · rasm formatishape: a ready-made figure such as an oval, star or rectangle · shakl (figura)text wrapping: how text flows around a picture · matn aylanishiscreenshot: a picture of the screen · skrinshot
Explanation
Pictures, photos and drawings make a document clear and attractive. In Word a picture can be inserted in several ways from the Insert tab: a picture file from the computer, a picture from the internet, a screenshot, ready-made Shapes or SmartArt. Pictures are saved in different formats – PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF – which differ in quality and file size. When a picture is selected the Picture Format tab appears in the ribbon, where you can choose border, shadow, size and style. Resize by dragging a corner handle (a corner handle keeps the proportions) and rotate with the circular handle above. “Wrap text” sets how the picture sits with the text. To write inside a shape, click it and add text. When taking pictures from the internet, choose a trustworthy source with an adult’s help, name the author, and never put other people’s photos in a document without their permission.
Worked examples
A “Space” poster: Insert → Shapes → pick a star, copy it and place the copies in different sizes; put a big circle – a planet – in the middle and colour it blue.
For a school newsletter, place a picture beside the text: select the picture, choose “Wrap text” → “Square”, and drag the picture next to the text.
Class activity
“Illustrated menu”: in pairs, pupils decorate a “School canteen menu” page with shapes and pictures, using “Wrap text” so the pictures do not cover the words.
Practice
1
Which ways of inserting a picture in Word do you know? Give at least three.
From a file on the computer; from the internet; screenshot; shapes; SmartArt.
2
Name four picture formats.
PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF
3
Where should you hold a picture to shrink it without distorting it?
By a corner handle.
4
Why should you not put your friend’s photo in a document or online without permission?
Because it disrespects the person’s privacy; they may not want it, and the picture could end up in other people’s hands.
