Explanation

In a graphics editor we can not only draw new pictures but also edit ready ones. A picture is loaded with File → Open. To resize it choose Resize in the Image menu; if the width-to-height ratio is kept, the picture is not stretched. Rotating by 90° or flipping horizontally or vertically is in the same menu. To add words choose the text tool (the letter T), click the place on the picture, then pick the font, size and colour and type. When the text is finished it becomes part of the picture, so it is handy to write it on a separate layer (we shall learn layers soon). The Effects menu (blur, frost, pencil sketch and others) changes how a picture looks. Work only with your own pictures or ones you have permission to use. Greeting cards, calendars and book covers are made this way.

Worked examples
A holiday card: open your own picture, resize it to 600 × 400, and with the text tool write a 36-point greeting in the bottom left corner.
A calendar page: a picture on top and the month name below, with the seven weekdays in a row written with the text tool: 7 words.
Class activity

“Card workshop”: pupils make a card for a parent or teacher from their own pictures; colour and size must keep the text readable. The most readable text wins.

Practice
1
Which tool adds writing to a picture?
2
Why should the ratio be kept when resizing a picture?
3
A picture is 600 × 400. If we make it half the size (both sides divided by 2), what is the new width?
4
What colour of writing suits a picture with a dark background? Why?
