Explanation

In a yes/no question was/were comes first: “Were you at home last night?” “Was he in the garage?” Short answers: “Yes, I was.” / “No, I wasn’t.” “Yes, we were.” / “No, we weren’t.” “Yes, she was.” / “No, she wasn’t.” (wasn’t = was not, weren’t = were not). Add more information: “No, I wasn’t. I was at my aunt’s house.” With was/were we do not use “do”: was/were itself comes first.

Worked examples
Were you at the library yesterday afternoon? Yes, I was.
Was your father at work last night? No, he wasn’t. He was at home.
Class activity

“Detective”: one child is the witness, the others are detectives. They ask “Were you in the garden at five o’clock?” The witness answers “Yes, I was.” / “No, I wasn’t.” Finally they find out what the witness did.
