Explanation

Job names use “a” or “an”: “a doctor”, “a nurse”, but “an artist”, “an actor” because they start with a vowel sound. For people in business we say “businessman” (male) and “businesswoman” (female). A “vet” is an animal doctor, short for “veterinarian”. Plurals: doctors, nurses, pilots. To ask about a job: “What does he do?” – “He’s a pilot.” Many job names can be used for anyone: “The doctor is kind.”

Worked examples

An artist paints pictures. A vet helps sick animals.
