Working with text

Textbook: pp. 122–123
GoalWork on a text: theme, main idea, plan and analysis of composite sentences.
New words
text · matntheme · mavzumain idea · g‘oyaplan · reja
Explanation

In working on a text we first read it carefully and decide the theme, that is, what it is about. The main idea (g‘oya) is the central thought the author wants to convey. Then we divide the text into parts and make a plan: each part gives one small thought. After that we analyze the sentences: which are composite, of what type, which punctuation is used and why. If there is direct speech we separate the author’s words from the quotation. This work prepares you for written speech and exam tasks.

Worked examples
“Kitob – sodiq do‘st” (Book is a loyal friend). Sherzod read a library book in one evening, but its content made him think. The book told of a young man: if he read for an hour each day, he felt different by the end of the year. Sherzod decided to try this. He planned his time and looked at his phone less. A month later his mother said: “You have become calmer than before.” Sherzod smiled: the book had given him new thoughts and new words.
Analysis: theme – the effect of reading on a person; main idea – regular reading changes a person. Plan: 1) impression from the book; 2) the trial; 3) the result. Sentence 1 is linked (ammo). The last sentence is without a conjunction; the colon shows an explanation. «Onasi dedi: «…»» is a sentence with direct speech (M: «K»).
Class activity

“Text analyst”: each pair finds one composite sentence in the text, explains its type and punctuation, and the class judges.
