Explanation

An ellipsis (three dots) shows that something is left unsaid: when a thought is not finished, when part of a quotation is left out, when the speaker hesitates and speaks haltingly, when a question gets no answer, or when a letter or word is not written: «Men aytmoqchi edimki...». Brackets set apart extra information from the main thought: they hold a parenthetical sentence, a stage direction (remarka), or an explanatory word or phrase; also, if two forms of a person, place, work or event are given, one of them is put in brackets: Alisher Navoiy (1441–1501), Samarqand (Afrosiyob). The explanation in brackets is not part of the main structure of the sentence. Stage directions are written in brackets, usually after the name of the speaker (kulib).

Worked examples
Ellipsis: Men bugun aytmoqchi edim... Yo‘q, keyinroq aytaman. / ...Shu bilan suhbatimiz tugadi.
Brackets: Zahiriddin Muhammad Bobur (1483–1530) buyuk shoir edi. / Aziz (jilmayib): Men tayyorman.
Class activity

“What do three dots hide?”: the teacher says unfinished sentences; pupils guess the continuation.
