Explanation
The same information can be presented in an artistic or a scientific way. Artistic presentation has imagery, simile, personification and appeals more to feeling. Scientific presentation uses terms, exact figures and evidence and has almost no figurative meaning. In this chapter we studied informational and creative-descriptive text, kinds of essays, planning, and epigraph choice. In review you should be able to state each notion’s definition in your own words and give an example. Choosing a style that fits the topic in writing is the mark of a good writer.
Worked examples
Artistic: “Oy kumush tangadek osmon qa’riga osilgan edi.” (The moon hung like a silver coin in the depths of the sky.) Scientific: “Oy Yerning tabiiy yo‘ldoshi, uning atrofida taxminan 27 sutkada aylanadi.” (The Moon is Earth’s natural satellite and orbits it in about 27 days.)
Question: “In which style are there few epithets and many figures?” Answer: in the scientific style.
Class activity
Two faces: on one topic (e.g. rain) one pupil says two sentences in artistic, another in scientific style; the class names the style.
Practice
1
Present in two styles: a tree sheds its leaves in autumn.
Artistic: a tree takes off its golden dress. Scientific: leaves fall under the effect of cold.
2
Name the parts of an essay plan and the kinds of essays.
Introduction, main part, conclusion; literary, free-topic, scientific.
3
What is an epigraph and where is it written?
A wise saying fitting the topic; after the plan, before the text, on the right.
4
Why must a writer choose style according to topic and aim?
Because a wrong style makes the thought unclear or ineffective for the reader.
