Explanation

In Uzbek the position of sentence parts is fairly free, but there is also a usual order. Normally the subject with its dependent parts stands at the beginning and the predicate at the end; the hol and object come before the predicate, and the attribute before the word it modifies: “Akam kecha kutubxonadan kitob oldi”. If the speaker wants to stress a part, he or she moves it right before the predicate, and its meaning becomes stronger. Scientific and official texts keep the usual order; in conversation, artistic speech and especially poetry the order often changes. The predicate may even move to the beginning: “Keldi bahor”.

Worked examples
Usual: “Ukam bugun kutubxonaga bordi.” Changed: “Bordi ukam bugun kutubxonaga.”
Emphasis: the placement of “kecha” and “dars” changes what is stressed.
Class activity

Rearranging: re-order the parts of one sentence several times and say what is stressed each time.

Practice
1
Rearrange “Ukam bugun maktabga yangi sumka bilan bordi” to stress “bugun”.
