Explanation

A literary essay is written about a particular work of literature or its characters. In it the pupil analyses the events of the work and the fates of its characters in connection with the writer’s skill, supporting the ideas with sources. This differs from retelling the plot: every idea is backed by a reason and by evidence from the work. The descriptive stories or letters you wrote in the lower grades may resemble an essay, but since they did not require a careful plan and special preparation they do not count as a full essay. A literary essay may be written as an impartial analysis or in a creative form that includes the author’s personal attitude.

Worked examples
Topic: “Depiction of friendship in the epic Alpomish”. Plan: I. Introduction — the epic’s place in people’s life. II. 1) events of friendship; 2) the heroes’ actions; 3) their moral meaning. III. Conclusion.
Topic “My favourite character” — in a literary-creative way: the pupil gives examples from the work and states an attitude to the hero.
