Explanation
The proverb “words differ from words” reminds us that one idea can be said with different words, but the effect will not be the same. For example, kamtar (modest) inspires respect, while manman (conceited) carries a tone of blame. So to express a thought precisely and politely we must be able to choose synonyms and antonyms well. This year the main focus is syntax: how words join to form a word combination and a sentence, the parts of the sentence and punctuation. Along the way we also develop essay writing, work with classical texts and expressive speech.
Worked examples
Same meaning, different effect: “Bola indamay turdi” and “Bola sukut saqlab turdi”. The second sounds more formal and serious.
Antonym pairs: saxiy (generous) — xasis (stingy), mehribon (kind) — berahm (cruel). They show contrast in a description.
Class activity
In pairs, restate one plain sentence in three tones (friendly, formal, moving) using synonyms and discuss when each fits.
Practice
1
Do the words kibr and g‘urur mean the same? Justify.
No: kibr is putting oneself above others (negative); g‘urur is awareness of one’s worth (positive).
2
Give two synonyms and one antonym of yaxshi.
Synonyms: durust, a’lo; antonym: yomon.
3
What is the main part of the Grade 8 course about?
Syntax: word combination, sentence and its parts, punctuation.
4
Why do we pay attention to word choice when expressing a thought?
Because the word decides how precise the thought is and how it affects the listener: a poorly chosen word distorts the meaning or offends.
