Review of the secondary parts of the sentence
Textbook: pp. 105–106
GoalIdentify secondary parts (hol, object, attribute) in a text; the tale “Ulug‘bekning shogirdi”.
New words
analysis · tahlilpupil · shogirdrespect · hurmatstudent (seeker of knowledge) · tolibi ilm
Explanation
In this lesson hol, object and attribute are reviewed. Hol is found by asking the predicate qanday? qachon? qayerda? nega?; the object by case questions kimni? nimaga?; the attribute by asking the noun qanday? qaysi? kimning? The text is a tale from the book Allomalar ibrati: Ulug‘bek, hearing that his favourite pupil Ali Qushchi had fallen ill, decides to visit him; the chief vizier and the shaykh al-islam oppose this, and Ulug‘bek says that visiting people of knowledge is a good deed. The tale shows respect for knowledge. In the analysis the kind and expression of each part are determined.
Worked examples
Analysis: “Sulton sevimli shogirdini ertalab ko‘rgani bordi” — sevimli: descriptive attribute; shogirdini: direct object; ertalab: hol of time.
Analysis: “Ustozning maslahati menga yordam berdi” — ustozning: possessive attribute; menga: indirect object.
Class activity
Colouring parts: choose a colour for each kind of part and mark the text’s sentences.
Practice
1
What is the hol and the subject in “Ulug‘bek yo‘lga tez otlandi”?
Subject — Ulug‘bek; hol — tez (manner), yo‘lga (place).
2
Find the predicate and object in “Ilm ahlini ziyorat qilish savob”.
Predicate — savob; object — ahlini (within ziyorat qilish).
3
Express your attitude to the advice of the chief vizier and the shaykh al-islam.
They put rank above knowledge; Ulug‘bek showed that people of learning must be respected, and he was right.
4
Why is the predicate identified first in text analysis?
Because hol and object depend on the predicate, and questions are asked from it.
