Intonation and punctuation in sentences with set-off parts
Textbook: pp. 120–123
GoalIntonation and punctuation (comma, dash, brackets) in sentences with set-off parts; emphasis and specification.
In writing a set-off explanatory part is usually separated by commas, dashes or brackets, and in speech it is said with a pause and special intonation. 1) Usually such a part is set off by commas on both sides: “Maktab yonidagi bog‘da, eng salqin joyda, do‘stlarim kutib turishardi”. 2) If the set-off part itself contains commas, dashes are put on both sides of it: “Do‘stlarim — Ali, Vali va Sali — kutubxonaga kelishdi”. 3) If the set-off part is homogeneous and comes at the end of the sentence, a dash is put before it: “Bobomning bir bog‘i bor — keng va serhosil”. Set-off parts are used to emphasise an idea or to make the meaning more precise. Without punctuation the set-off part blends with another part and logical confusion arises.
Worked examples
Commas on both sides: “Akam, Toshkentda o‘qiydigan talaba, ta’tilga keldi.” Dashes: “Yozgi ta’tilda — iyun, iyul va avgustda — dam olamiz.”
Emphasis: “U yaxshi odam — mehribon, halol” (dash at the end). Specification: “Kitoblarni, ya’ni darsliklarni, olib keldim.”
Class activity
Pause work: the class reads sentences with set-off parts with intonation and puts the punctuation on the board.
Practice
1
Add punctuation: Bizning sinf o‘quvchilari a’lochilar jamoasi tanlovda g‘olib bo‘ldi.
Bizning sinf o‘quvchilari, a’lochilar jamoasi, tanlovda g‘olib bo‘ldi.
2
Which mark is used if the set-off part itself contains a comma?
Dashes on both sides.
3
Give one example each of set-off parts for emphasis and for specification.
Emphasis: U kuldi — g‘ayrat bilan, dil-dildan. Specification: Ertaga, ya’ni chorshanba kuni, ko‘rishamiz.
4
What can happen if punctuation is omitted? Give an example.
A logical error: “Dadam shifokor Rustamov keldi” — one person or two? With “Dadam, shifokor Rustamov, keldi” it is clear that it is one person.
