Forming the verbal noun
Textbook: pp. 55–56
GoalKnow how to form the verbal noun and spell it correctly.
New words
formation · yasalishsuffix after a vowel · -shsuffix after a consonant · -ishsuffix -v · -v
Explanation
The verbal noun is made by adding -(i)sh, -(u)v, -moq to verb stems: yasha+sh, kel+ish, yoz+uv, bil+moq. -sh is added to stems ending in a vowel and -ish to those ending in a consonant: o‘qi — o‘qish, yoz — yozish. -uv is added to stems ending in a consonant: yoz — yozuv. -v is added to stems ending in a vowel. If the stem ends in a, the a becomes o: ishla — ishlov, so‘ra — so‘rov; if it ends in i, the i becomes u: o‘qi — o‘quv, tani — tanuv. This change is also shown in spelling.
Worked examples
ishla — ishlov (a → o) (processing); so‘ra — so‘rov (a → o) (request).
o‘qi — o‘quv (i → u) (study); tani — tanuv (i → u) (recognition).
Class activity
“Make the verbal noun”: children pick -sh, -ish, -uv or -v correctly for a stem on a card and write the word on the board.

kelish, o‘qish.
2
Form the -v verbal noun from ishla.
ishlov (a changed to o).
3
Form a -v word from tani and explain its spelling.
tanuv: the vowel i becomes u.
4
Why is it written ishlov and not ishlav?
