Explanation
Morphology studies the grammatical meanings and forms of words. A word is made of a stem and suffixes. Suffixes are word-building or form-building; form-builders are lexical or syntactic. Words without a word-building suffix are root words and those with one are derived. The order of the parts: stem, word-building, lexical, syntactic.
Worked examples
ozchilik (minority) = oz + -chilik; zargar (jeweller) = zar + -gar; fidokorlik (selflessness) = fido + -kor + -lik.
bayramlarga (to the holidays) = bayram + -lar + -ga (both form-building).
Class activity
“Morphology relay”: teams come to the board in turn, split a given word and label the type of each part.
Practice
1
Find the word-building suffixes: -ni, -dor, -lar, -zor.
-dor, -zor.
2
Break bilimdonlarimiz into parts and name the types.
bilim (stem) + -don (word-building) + -lar (lexical) + -imiz (syntactic).
3
Which word is derived: daftar, daftarlar, daftarchi?
Daftarchi (one who keeps a notebook/ledger).
4
Explain the difference between lexical and syntactic form-builders.
Lexical ones add extra meaning to the stem (-lar); syntactic ones link the word to another word (-ga, -im).
