Do you want to be healthy?
Textbook: p. 26
GoalGive advice about healthy and unhealthy food with “should / shouldn’t”.
New words
healthy · sog‘lomunhealthy · nosog‘lomvitamin · vitaminshould · kerak, lozim (maslahat)
Explanation
Should is a modal verb for advice: “You should eat fruit and vegetables.” Negative: shouldn’t: “You shouldn’t eat a lot of sweets.” Should is the same for every person and is followed by the base verb without to or -s: “He should drink water”, not “He shoulds”. Question: “Should I eat more vegetables?” — “Yes, you should.” Healthy food: fruit, vegetables, milk, fish, water. Unhealthy in large amounts: sweets, chocolate, chips, fizzy drinks. Give a reason with because: “You should eat fruit because it has vitamins.”
Worked examples
“Healthy habits”. To be healthy you should eat fruit and vegetables every day. You should drink water and go to bed early. You shouldn’t eat a lot of sweets or chips, and you shouldn’t drink too much fizzy lemonade. It is also good to play outside, because exercise makes you strong.
— Should I eat chocolate every day? — No, you shouldn’t. You should eat fruit.
