Textbook: p. 75
GoalTell fairy-tale events with the Past Continuous and Past Simple together; “Can birds and animals talk?”
New words
while · shu payt (…ganda)suddenly · to‘satdanswallow · qaldirg‘ochtalk · gapirmoq
Explanation

In fairy tales birds and animals talk. To describe a scene use the Past Continuous: “The baby was sleeping and his mother was cooking.” A short event uses the Past Simple: “Suddenly a mosquito bit him.” While goes with a long action: “While the mother was cooking, the baby was sleeping.” When goes with a short event: “When the owl called, the fox looked up.” The “Chain” game: Who? (my friend and my dog) — What were they doing? (were swimming) — Where? (in the river) — When? (at 6 a.m. yesterday). Question: “Can birds and animals talk?” — Not in real life, but in fairy tales they can.

Worked examples
“The talking swallow”. A swallow was flying over the village when she heard a voice. A little boy was sitting by the river, and a crocodile was watching him. “Run away!” cried the swallow. The boy jumped up and ran home. While the crocodile was looking around, the swallow flew away. From that day the boy always listened to birds.
— What was the swallow doing? — She was flying over the village. — What happened? — She heard a voice.
