Explanation
Big countries and capitals in Europe: the United Kingdom – London; France – Paris; Germany – Berlin; Italy – Rome; Spain – Madrid. Question: “Where are we?” — “We’re in Europe.” Big numbers: 1,000 – one thousand; 1,500 – one thousand five hundred; 25,000 – twenty-five thousand; 450,000 – four hundred and fifty thousand; 1,000,000 – one million; 2,500,000 – two million five hundred thousand; 32,500,000 – thirty-two million five hundred thousand. In writing, use commas between groups of three digits (1,500), not spaces. Say and before the last tens or units: 3,205 – three thousand two hundred and five. Comparison: Germany has more people than Italy.
Worked examples
“A trip to Europe”. We’re in Europe now! This morning we were in Paris, the capital of France. Tomorrow we’re going to Rome, the capital of Italy. About two million people live in Paris, and about three million live in Rome. In the evening I write postcards to my friends in Tashkent.
2,500,000 — two million five hundred thousand; 447,400 — four hundred and forty-seven thousand four hundred.
Class activity
“Number bingo”: cards with 1,300; 4,643; 447,400; 2,500,000; the teacher says a number and the pupils mark it.
