Textbook: p. 41
GoalProject: life in the past — interview a grandparent and compare.
New words
interview · intervyuin the past · o‘tmishdathen · oldinnow · hozir
Explanation
Project: ask your grandmother or grandfather 5 questions about childhood: “Where did you live?”, “What did you play?”, “Did you have a TV?”, “How did you go to school?”, “What did you eat?” Write the answers in the Past Simple: “My grandfather walked to school. He didn’t have a TV, but he played football outside.” Then compare then and now: “Then people wrote letters. Now they send messages.” Do not mix the Present Simple and the Past Simple. In your presentation say 6–8 sentences and show one picture.
Worked examples
“My grandmother’s childhood”. My grandmother grew up in a village. She walked to school every day, two kilometres. She didn’t have a TV or a telephone, but she played games with her friends in the yard. Her family ate bread, soup and fruit from the garden. Now she has a phone and she talks to us on video!
— Did you have a TV when you were young? — No, I didn’t. — What did you do after school? — I helped my mother and played in the yard.
Class activity
“Interview”: in pairs one pupil plays a grandparent; the other asks 5 questions and the “grandparent” answers.
Practice
1
Write in the Past Simple: My grandfather (walk) to school.
walked
2
Make it negative: She had a TV.
She didn’t have a TV.
3
Make a question: you / have / a TV / when you were young
Did you have a TV when you were young?
4
Why do we compare with “then” and “now”?
Then points to the past and now to the present, so they show change.
