Explanation

Inanimate nouns answer «что?» (what?): «класс, парта, окно, книга». They also have three genders: masculine («он»: «стол, глобус, словарь»), feminine («она»: «сумка, карта, ручка») and neuter («оно»: «окно, яблоко, задание»). We usually tell the gender from the ending: «-а, -я» are generally feminine, «-о, -е» neuter, a consonant or «-й» masculine. Words ending in a soft sign («ь») must be memorised: «тетрадь, дверь, соль» are «она»; «словарь, портфель, день» are «он». We ask about possession with «чей? чья? чьё? чьи?»: «мой рюкзак, моя линейка, моё яблоко, наш глобус, ваша сумка».

Worked examples
“Наш класс” (Our classroom). «Это наш класс. Вот доска, а это окно. На парте лежат тетрадь, ручка и линейка. Это моя тетрадь, а это его учебник. Чья это ручка? Это ручка Лолы.» (This is our classroom. Here is the board and this is the window. A notebook, a pen and a ruler lie on the desk. This is my notebook and this is his textbook. Whose pen is this? It is Lola’s pen.)
By gender: «он — стол, журнал, портфель», «она — парта, книга, тетрадь», «оно — окно, письмо, кресло» (armchair).
