Relative adjectives (material, time, place)
Textbook: pp. 32–37
GoalForm relative adjectives from nouns and tell them apart from qualitative adjectives.
Relative adjectives (относительные имена прилагательные) name a feature through a relation to another thing: material («шёлковый, деревянный»), time («осенний, вечерний»), place or purpose («школьный, футбольный»). They are formed from nouns with suffixes: «кожа — кожаный (-ан-)», «шерсть — шерстяной (-ян-)», «резина — резиновый (-ов-)», «ситец — ситцевый (-ев-)», «осень — осенний (-енн-)», «фрукты — фруктовый». Of the adjectives with «-ан-/-ян-», only «деревянный, стеклянный, оловянный» are written with double «н»; the suffix «-енн-» also has double «н»: «осенний, весенний». A relative adjective cannot take «очень» (nobody says «очень деревянный»), but a qualitative adjective can («очень красивый»). They also answer «какой? какая? какое? какие?» and agree with the noun.
Worked examples
“Осенний день” (An autumn day). «Сегодня осенний день. Мама надела шерстяной свитер, а я — резиновые сапоги. В школьном саду растут фруктовые деревья. Вот деревянная миска, вот стеклянная ваза. Это яблочное варенье, а это малиновый компот.» (Today is an autumn day. Mum put on a woollen sweater and I put on rubber boots. Fruit trees grow in the school garden. Here is a wooden bowl, here is a glass vase. This is apple jam and this is raspberry compote.)
“What is it made of?” The teacher points to an object (a ruler, a hat) and pupils name its material with a relative adjective: «деревянная линейка», «шерстяная шапка».
