Explanation

Yuri Dmitrievich Dmitriev (1926–1989) was a Russian writer and biologist who wrote about nature for children. This text introduces the animal world and awakens interest in it. In it one man greets a squirrel in the forest, another asks a crocodile in a river «Как живёшь?», and a third talks with a tit in his garden. The author explains with humour that animals have their own “languages”: they “talk” with whistles, cries, dances and even light. At the zoo we do not disturb the animals and never put a hand through the cage.

Worked examples
«В зоопарке» (after the text). (“Hello, squirrel! Where do you live?” “In the hollow of an old tree.” “Hello, crocodile! How do you live?” “I live in warm water and eat fish.” “Hello, tit! What do you like?” “Seeds and grains.” We like to watch the animals and do not disturb them.)
