Explanation

A noun in the singular (единственное число) names one thing, in the plural (множественное число) several. Masculine nouns usually take «-ы/-и»: «стол — столы, класс — классы, календарь — календари». Feminine: «-а → -ы, -я → -и»: «комната — комнаты, песня — песни», and «-ь → -и»: «тетрадь — тетради». Neuter: «-о → -а, -е → -я»: «окно — окна, море — моря». After «г, к, х, ж, ч, ш, щ» we write «и», never «ы»: «ручка — ручки, книга — книги, карандаш — карандаши». Some nouns take «-а/-я» in the plural: «город — города, дом — дома, учитель — учителя»; others are special: «друг — друзья, брат — братья, ребёнок — дети, человек — люди». Animal young: «котёнок — котята, медвежонок — медвежата».

Worked examples
“Наш двор” (Our yard). «Это наш двор. Здесь стоят дома и скамейки. Там растут деревья и цветы. В классе окна, парты и стулья. Это мои друзья Азиз и Тимур. Они братья.» (This is our yard. Houses and benches stand here. Trees and flowers grow there. In the classroom there are windows, desks and chairs. These are my friends Aziz and Timur. They are brothers.)
Pairs: «окно — окна», «слово — слова», «ручка — ручки», «книга — книги», «тетрадь — тетради», «котёнок — котята».
Class activity

“One — many”. The teacher names a singular («парта»); pupils answer with the plural («парты») and a clap. For special words («друг — друзья») the class stands up.

Practice
1
Make plural: «стол, парта, окно, тетрадь».
2
Make plural: «ученик, книга, карандаш».
3
Special forms: how do «друг, брат, ребёнок, город» look in the plural?
4
Why do we write «ручки» and not «ручкы»?
