Explanation
An adjective (имя прилагательное) names a feature of a thing (colour, size, taste, quality) and answers «какой? какая? какое? какие?» (what kind?). In the singular it changes with the gender of the noun: masculine «-ый, -ий, -ой» (новый, синий, большой), feminine «-ая, -яя» (новая, синяя, большая), neuter «-ое, -ее» (новое, синее, большое); in the plural all genders take «-ые, -ие» (новые, синие). We find the adjective by asking the noun a question: «какой стол? какая ручка? какое окно? какие ребята?». After «г, к, х, ж, ч, ш, щ» we write «и», not «ы»: «хороший — хорошие, маленький — маленькие». Adjectives with opposite meaning are antonyms («большой — маленький, хороший — плохой»); adjectives with similar meaning are synonyms («большой — огромный, смелый — храбрый»).
Worked examples
“Наша школа” (Our school). «Это наша школа. Она большая и светлая. В школе широкие коридоры и чистые классы. Учитель у нас добрый и весёлый. Наш класс дружный. Мы хорошие ученики.» (This is our school. It is big and bright. The school has wide corridors and clean classrooms. Our teacher is kind and cheerful. Our class is friendly. We are good pupils.)
“Opposite word”. A pupil says an adjective («горячий»), the partner gives the antonym («холодный») and makes a sentence: «Чай горячий, а вода холодная».
