The infinitive («что делать?»); «можно, нужно, надо, нельзя»

Explanation

A verb (глагол) names an action. The infinitive (неопределённая форма) answers «что делать?» or «что сделать?» and ends in «-ть» (sometimes «-ти, -чь»): «играть, плавать, идти, беречь». The words «можно, нужно, надо, необходимо, нельзя» show that an action is allowed or needed; the person is given in the dative: «мне, тебе, ему, ей, нам, вам, им, Азизу, Лоле»: «Мне можно играть. Тебе нужно мыть руки. Нельзя опаздывать». For advice we can also use «следует». The verbs «хотеть, мочь, любить» are followed by the infinitive too: «Я хочу плавать. Ты можешь бегать. Он любит читать». Spelling: the infinitive ends in «-ться» (question «что делать?»), the 3rd person in «-тся» (question «что делает?»): «надо умываться», but «он умывается».

Worked examples
“Здоровый день” (A healthy day). «Утром нужно делать зарядку и умываться. Нельзя опаздывать в школу. После уроков можно кататься на велосипеде. Лола любит плавать и хочет тренироваться каждый день. Азиз тренируется в спортзале. Всем следует мыть руки перед обедом.» (In the morning you need to do exercises and wash. You must not be late for school. After lessons you may ride a bike. Lola likes to swim and wants to train every day. Aziz trains in the gym. Everyone should wash their hands before lunch.)
«-ться / -тся»: «Ему надо учиться. — Он учится.» «Ей нужно заниматься. — Она занимается.» «Нельзя ссориться (to quarrel). — Они ссорятся.»
Class activity

“Allowed — not allowed”. Two teams. The teacher names a place: «В библиотеке», «В бассейне», «На уроке». Teams take turns forming sentences with «можно ...» or «нельзя ...»: «В библиотеке нельзя шуметь».
