Explanation
The verb in the past tense (прошедшее время) answers «что делал? что сделал?». It is formed from the infinitive by dropping «-ть» and adding «-л»: «читать → читал». In the past tense the verb changes with gender in the singular and with number in the plural: «он читал» (masculine), «она читала» (feminine), «оно читало» (neuter), «они читали» (plural). With «я» and «ты» the verb matches the speaker’s gender: «я читал» (a boy), «я читала» (a girl). Special forms: «быть — был, была, было, были»; «идти — шёл, шла, шло, шли»; «нести — нёс, несла»; «вести — вёл, вела»; «расти — рос, росла»; «помочь — помог, помогла»; «есть — ел, ела». «Ходил» (went and came back) and «ушёл» (left and has not come back) differ in meaning.
Worked examples
“В музее” (At the museum). «Вчера наш класс ходил в музей. Мы видели старинные монеты и картины. Лола рисовала, а я читал надписи. Потом мы вышли на улицу и играли. Дома мама спросила: „Что вы делали?“ Мы рассказали всё. Папа был рад.» (Yesterday our class went to the museum. We saw ancient coins and pictures. Lola drew while I read the labels. Then we went out into the street and played. At home Mum asked, “What did you do?” We told her everything. Dad was glad.)
“Yesterday”. A pupil tells about yesterday in 3 sentences: «Вчера я ходил (ходила) ... Я читал (читала) ... Я был (была) ...». The class checks the verb gender.
