Explanation
A noun (имя существительное) names a thing and answers «кто?» (animate) or «что?» (inanimate). Nouns have three genders: masculine, feminine, neuter; we tell the gender from the ending. A noun changes by number (singular, plural) and by case. Russian has 6 cases (падеж): «именительный — кто? что?», «родительный — кого? чего?», «дательный — кому? чему?», «винительный — кого? что?», «творительный — кем? чем?», «предложный — о ком? о чём?». Models: «школа, школы, школе, школу, школой, о школе»; «брат, брата, брату, брата, братом, о брате»; «окно, окна, окну, окно, окном, об окне». Plural: «школы, школ, школам, школы, школами, о школах».
Worked examples
“Мой брат и школа” (My brother and the school). «Мой брат каждый день ходит в школу. Я рассказываю о брате друзьям. Я вижу брата каждый день и горжусь братом. Нет брата дома — нет и шума. Мы подарили брату книгу о школе.» (My brother goes to school every day. I tell my friends about my brother. I see my brother every day and I am proud of him. If my brother is not at home, there is no noise. We gave my brother a book about school.)
