Explanation

Evgeny Ivanovich Charushin (1901–1965) was a Russian writer and artist who wrote stories about animals and drew them. «Томка» is about how the author chooses a hunting puppy. The puppies are different: one only eats and sleeps, one is angry, one licks everybody. The author takes away a piece of wood that one puppy is chewing and hides it. The puppy sniffs and sniffs and finds the wood, so he will be a good hunter. The author names him Tomka and raises him as his helper.

Worked examples

Щенок долго нюхал и нашёл деревяшку. Рассказчик дал ему имя Томка и решил вырастить из него помощника.» (The narrator came to look at the puppies. One puppy only ate and slept, another growled, a third licked everybody. One puppy was chewing a piece of wood, and the narrator hid it. The puppy sniffed for a long time and found the wood. The narrator gave him the name Tomka and decided to raise him as a helper.)
