Explanation
A numeral (имя числительное) shows quantity or order and answers «сколько?» or «который?». «Один» changes by gender: «один стол, одна книга, одно окно». After «два, три, четыре» the noun is in the genitive singular: «два стола, три книги, четыре окна»; «два» becomes «две» with feminine nouns: «две книги». After «пять» and higher the noun is in the genitive plural: «пять столов, шесть книг, десять окон». To ask the time: «Который час?» — «Три часа», «пять часов», «час». Years: «в этом году», «два года», «пять лет».
Worked examples
“В классе” (In the class). «В нашем классе двадцать шесть учеников. У нас пять уроков в день. Первый урок начинается в восемь часов. На столе лежат две тетради и три книги. В неделе семь дней, а в году двенадцать месяцев.» (There are twenty-six pupils in our class. We have five lessons a day. The first lesson begins at eight o'clock. Two notebooks and three books are on the table. There are seven days in a week and twelve months in a year.)
Forms: «1 час, 2 часа, 5 часов»; «1 год, 3 года, 6 лет»; «1 книга, 2 книги, 7 книг»; «1 окно, 4 окна, 9 окон».
Class activity
“Shop game”. Set up a class «shop»: a pupil says «Дайте, пожалуйста, пять карандашей и две тетради», the seller repeats the numbers correctly and answers «Вот, пожалуйста». Swap roles.
