Explanation

The dative case (дательный падеж) answers «кому?» (to whom?). Masculine and neuter nouns take «-у/-ю»: «друг — другу, учитель — учителю, герой — герою»; feminine nouns take «-е» or «-и»: «подруга — подруге, тётя — тёте, Мария — Марии, мать — матери»; in the plural it is «-ам/-ям»: «друзьям, героям, родителям». It is used with the verbs «дарить, звонить, помогать, рассказывать, советовать, обещать, верить». Personal pronouns: «я — мне, ты — тебе, он — ему, она — ей, мы — нам, вы — вам, они — им». It also goes with «нужен, нужна, нужно, нужны»: «Микроскоп нужен врачу».

Worked examples
“Подарки” (Presents). «Азиз звонит другу и дарит ему книгу. Лола помогает маме и рассказывает бабушке новости. Папа обещает сыну новый мяч. Микроскоп нужен врачу, а краски нужны художнику.» (Aziz phones a friend and gives him a book. Lola helps Mum and tells Grandma the news. Dad promises his son a new ball. A doctor needs a microscope and an artist needs paints.)
«Кто?» → «Кому?»: «я — мне», «ты — тебе», «он — ему», «она — ей», «мы — нам», «вы — вам», «они — им».
Class activity

“Who needs what?” The teacher names a profession (driver, artist, cook) and pupils say what is needed: «Руль нужен водителю», «Кисть нужна художнику».

Practice
1
«Кому?»: «друг, учитель, подруга, тётя».
2
Replace by a pronoun: «Лола звонила подруге. Лола звонила ... .»
3
Translate: “I need a book.”
4
Why do we say «Я подарил мяч другу» and not «друг»?
