The instrumental case («творительный падеж»): «кем? чем?»
Textbook: pp. 118–121
GoalForm and use the instrumental case («творительный падеж», «кем? чем?») of nouns.
The instrumental (творительный падеж) answers «кем? чем?» (with whom? with what?) and shows the tool of an action. Masculine and neuter nouns take «-ом/-ем»: «карандаш — карандашом, нож — ножом, мыло — мылом, полотенце — полотенцем». Feminine nouns take «-ой/-ей»: «ложка — ложкой, вода — водой, земля — землёй»; nouns in «-ь» take «-ью»: «кисть — кистью, тетрадь — тетрадью». The plural takes «-ами/-ями»: «карандашами, ножами, щётками, кистями». After «ж, ш, ч, щ, ц» we write «-ом» when the ending is stressed («ножом, карандашом») and «-ем» when it is not («товарищем»). Safety: knives, hammers, drills and axes are used only with an adult’s help. The verbs «заниматься, увлекаться, гордиться, интересоваться, пользоваться» also take the instrumental: «заниматься спортом».
Worked examples
“Что чем делают?” (Who does what with what?). «Мы пишем ручкой, рисуем карандашами и красками. Лола вытирает доску тряпкой. Дома мы едим ложкой, а руки моем водой и мылом. Мясо режет повар ножом, а гвозди забивает мастер молотком. Я интересуюсь историей и занимаюсь шахматами.» (We write with a pen and draw with pencils and paints. Lola wipes the board with a cloth. At home we eat with a spoon and wash our hands with water and soap. The cook cuts meat with a knife and the craftsman hammers nails with a hammer. I am interested in history and I play chess.)
“Which tool?” The teacher gives an action («Мы пишем ...», «Мы едим суп ...», «Дверь открывают ...»). Pupils name the tool in the instrumental: «ручкой», «ложкой», «ключом».
