Explanation
We ask about possession with «чей? (whose?). In Russian the thing comes first and the owner follows in the genitive: «комната брата, книга сестры, дом наших соседей». Uzbek puts the owner first («akaning xonasi»), so watch the word order. Names change as well: «Лола — тетрадь Лолы», «Азиз — мяч Азиза», «Мария — сумка Марии», «Игорь — книга Игоря». If the owner has an adjective or pronoun, it is also in the genitive: «велосипед моего младшего брата», «платок нашей бабушки», «сад наших соседей».
Worked examples
(Whose things are these?). (Here are our family’s things. This is my sister’s notebook. This is our teacher’s book. This is Aziz’s pen and this is my brother’s ball. This is Dad’s jacket and this is Grandma’s scarf. “Whose bag is this?” “It is Maria’s bag.”)
Class activity
“Whose thing?” Five objects from pupils (pen, notebook...) are collected. The teacher holds one up: «Чья это ручка?» Pupils answer «Это ручка Азиза».
